Well, Croatia is fast becoming a fond memory, it’s time to knuckle down and start building up the business – so naturally I’ve started firing off in twenty different directions at once.
I’ve recently set up a Tumblr account, which I quite like the look of so far and it’ll probably end up becoming what I intended this website to be; a place for quick thoughts, likes, photos, finds etc whereas this site will end up being a bit more in-depth. I like the immediacy of Tumblr, it seems quite disposable in a way and very limited in it’s options but that makes it all the more appealling, as J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr said “You need to be boxed in before you can break down the walls”.
I’m also finding a lot more enjoyment from the graphic design work I’ve done recently for my fiancee’s company Yellow Brolly. The designs for the flyers have been well received and I’ve started working on a variety of stationery designs for this, as the business is doing well already.
My journey with Javascript will get a post all to itself shortly but if anything is proof of how quickly the web can change then its surely this. It seems like only yesterday that Javascript was considered to be old fashioned and a symbol of how the web used to work, and when you’d try to talk to people about it all they could focus on is the fact that end users could disable it if they wanted “as it’s all in the browser”. Fast forward past the appearance (and near instantaneous integration) of frameworks like jQuery and Mootools, all of a sudden if you don’t have Javascript chops then it’s just not worth turning up. Add in to this mix Steve Jobs little spat with Adobe over Flash and endorsement of Javascript/HTML 5, and you have a web technology that has almost literally risen from the grave. Browser based technology is where it’s (currently) at in this Cloud-aware world, and Javascript has been anointed as the easiest way to do it.
I’m just concerned that if it can come back then does that mean I have to learn tables? Please say no, I love CSS, it makes sense……
